Agroecius is called a rhetor in two manuscripts of his Ars de orthographia, but there is little information about his life and activity.  He dedicates his work to Eucherius, the bishop of Lyon, who held that post from 434-450 AD; the author’s highly deferential stance seems to suggest that he was of an inferior rank at that time.  The fact that he was probably of Gallic origin has often caused him to be identified with the bishop of Sens mentioned in Sidonius Apollinaris’ Epistle 7.5 (Kaster); if correct, this will mean that he was alive in 470-71 AD.  It has thus been hypothesized that he composed his grammatical treatise before being elevated to the episcopate, and that the Ars should be dated on chronological grounds to the 5^th c. AD.  Agroecius was perhaps affiliated with Censorius Atticus Agricius, a rhetor from Bordeaux who is mentioned in Ausonius, Prof. 15.  [A. Balbo; tr. C. L. Caterine].
