The only certain fact about the author of the De Scauri et Palladii libris excerpta per interrogationem et responsionem is his name: Audax.  His work provides no information about his origins, background, or social status, and Julian of Toledo, who refers to Audax in the course of his Ars, simply identifies him as a grammaticus. His dating is likewise uncertain. Julian, who most likely died between 680 and 690 AD, offers a terminus ante quem, but doubt remains concerning his terminus post quem, which must be based on comparisons of Audax’ work to known authors whom he might have used as sources (e.g. Isidore of Seville for his chapter recapitulatio de accentibus, as maintained by Hubert).  It thus seems prudent to limit ourselves to saying that he must have lived between the 4^th c. AD and the 7^th c. AD.  It has also been hypothesized - on a few internal references - that he was a pagan (Schanz-Hosius).  [S. Mollea; tr. C. L. Caterine].
