Iulius Obsequens

saec. IV

Notices about this Roman author do not actually exist.  He is placed in the 4th c. AD, but only because critics date the composition of the Prodigiorum liber to this period, it being a work related to the breviary genre that was flourishing at that time; without good reason his activity has been placed before Honorius (Vossius).  From a religious point of view, his paganism is now universally recognized; this can be seen in the fact that the prodigia of the zodiacal constellations are able guide daily actions, and therefore serve as proof for the existence of the gods (Gasti).  Mommsen’s thesis that he was a Christian on the basis of certain similarities with Orosius has been entirely abandoned. [A. Balbo; tr. C. L. Caterine].
