A single manuscript (Par. Lat. 11303) also preserves - in addition to the Vita Vergili and the Praefatio to the Eclogues - the dedicatory epistle to the Vergilian commentary, addressed to a certain L. Munatius. In this Donatus makes clear the criteria he utilized in setting forth and synthesizing the preceding exegesis.
The epistle was used in the Vita Donati of a certain Flaccus Rebius, who addresses it to a certain Minutius Rotilus: it is a parodic text, attested by two codices of the 9th c., probably of a medieval scholastic-monastic environment (Brugnoli, Munzi, Conte). [F. Stok; tr. C. L. Caterine].
